Septic Systems and Flooding in Southeast Texas
Southeast Texas is a septic-plus-flooding region. Gulf Coast storms, tropical systems, and high-water-table conditions in Jefferson, Hardin, and Orange counties mean drain fields go under water regularly — and there are real things to do before, during, and after a flood to protect the system. This page covers pre-storm prep, what to do while flooded, and what to check after the water recedes.
Before the storm: pre-flood prep
- If you are near or past your pumping interval, pump before the storm. A full tank floats. Empty tanks are less buoyant and less likely to shift or crack under waterlogged soil pressure.
- Do NOT pump right before a flood if you have a low or empty tank. Empty concrete or plastic tanks in saturated soil can actually float out of the ground. Full tanks are heavier and stay put. Right balance is a tank that is not overdue but not freshly-pumped-and-empty.
- Secure tank lids. Confirm concrete lids are seated and any risers are secure. Wind and floating debris can dislodge them.
- Turn off aerobic (ATU) systems if flooding is likely. Blower motors and control panels are not waterproof. Kill the breaker before water reaches the panel.
- Reduce water use in the household as the storm approaches. Once the drain field is saturated it cannot accept flow — adding more sewage backs it up into the house.
During the flood: what to do
- Stop using water in the house. Every flush and every drain adds to sewage the flooded system cannot process.
- Do NOT open the tank lid to inspect. Water contamination + methane fumes make this a real hazard.
- Note when the water rises above the drain field grade. That is when the field stops functioning. Time-stamp it if you can — useful for insurance and post-flood diagnostics.
- Keep the aerobic breaker off if you shut it down pre-flood. Powering it up with wet components can burn out the blower or panel.
After the flood: assessment and recovery
- Wait for the water to fully recede before running any water in the house. A drain field that is still saturated cannot accept flow.
- Inspect the tank access. Look for shifted lids, floating debris, or obvious tank displacement. Do NOT open the lid yourself — that is a professional visit.
- Call for a post-flood inspection. Sludge check, baffle inspection, D-box condition, field grade assessment. We check whether the tank shifted, whether the field survived, and whether pumping is needed to clear flood-water infiltration from the tank.
- Aerobic system: do NOT power up until the panel and blower are inspected dry. Water damage to the control panel + wet blower motor = burnt-out components on startup. Have a service call before you re-energise.
- Watch for delayed backups. Even if the field looks recovered, saturated soil takes weeks to drain fully. Reduce water use for 2–4 weeks after major flooding; expect the field to be marginal for a while.
Signs your system was damaged by flooding
- Tank lid visibly shifted or displaced.
- Ground settling or sinking around the tank or drain field.
- Sewage backup in the house even weeks after the water is gone.
- Persistent wet spots over the drain field in dry weather.
- Aerobic control panel showing fault codes or refusing to power up.
- Sewage smell outside that was not there before the flood.
Any of these are diagnostic-visit territory. The scope of damage tells us whether it is a repair or a system-replacement conversation.
Insurance and TCEQ notes
Some flood insurance policies cover septic system damage from named-storm flooding — check your policy specifically. TCEQ does not usually issue new permits for post-flood repairs (that is a county Authorized Agent decision), but if flood damage triggers a system-type change or replacement, a new OSSF permit is required.
