Aerobic vs Conventional Septic in Texas
Texas OSSF rules give you three real system-type choices: conventional gravity, aerobic (ATU), and drip/pressurised. Which one is legal on your lot is decided by the soil percolation test and lot geometry, not by preference — but there is real cost, maintenance, and lifespan difference between them, and understanding the trade-off before you install matters.

Conventional gravity — when it fits
Cheapest to install, cheapest to run (no moving parts, no electric), longest-lived. Requires:
- Soil that percolates fast enough for a gravity drain field (typically not heavy clay).
- Enough lot area for the drain field to sit at required setbacks from wells, structures, and property lines.
- Water table low enough that vertical separation between field bottom and groundwater meets minimum.
On rural East Texas lots with sandy loam and lots of space, conventional is the default and usually the right answer. Southeast Texas coastal properties often cannot support it — soil percolation is too slow or water table is too high.
Aerobic (ATU) — when the site forces the decision
ATU systems use mechanical aeration + secondary treatment + chlorine disinfection + surface spray to disperse effluent. The trade-off: higher install cost, mandatory TCEQ maintenance contract for the life of the system, electric operating cost, and shorter component lifespan (blowers, chlorinators, control panels wear out).
But ATU works where conventional cannot — tight clay soils, small lots, high water table. Most residential Beaumont, Jefferson County, and Hardin County new installs since 2000 are aerobic for this reason. The site evaluation drives the decision, not preference.
TCEQ Chapter 285 requirements for ATU:
- Active maintenance contract with a registered provider (no lapse periods allowed).
- Minimum service every 4 months (some counties require every 3).
- Reports filed with the local Authorized Agent.
- Chlorine disinfection maintained — the spray field must not disperse un-chlorinated effluent.
Drip / pressurised — the third route
Uses a pump chamber to push effluent through drip irrigation lines buried below the surface. Best for lots with very poor percolation where an aerobic spray field is not practical, or for properties where the drain field has to run under landscape or driveway.
Higher up-front cost, but least intrusive above-grade footprint (nothing visible on the surface), and often lower maintenance than ATU because there is no chlorinator or spray-head service.

These are order-of-magnitude estimates for a typical residential system. Real 20-year cost varies significantly with tank size, use pattern, and how well maintenance is kept up.
The honest bottom line
If your lot supports conventional, install conventional — it is cheaper both up-front and lifetime. If your soil test says conventional is not viable, aerobic is the standard fallback and worth the higher cost for a working system on the lot you have. Drip is the third route when both of the above are ruled out. Do not choose aerobic on a lot that could support conventional just because it seems more modern — you will pay $17,000+ over 20 years for no benefit.
